Children dental appliances

It is recommended to monitor children from the age of 3 but no later than 7. If you follow these recommendations, it does not mean that at this age your child will wear braces, but that you will ensure a normal and harmonious growth of the teeth. From case to case, sometimes minimal interventions are needed to prevent orthodontic problems, and sometimes monitoring is sufficient, with the stage of wearing the dental appliance being indicated around the age of 10-14 years - if necessary. Even though most orthodontic treatments begin between the ages of 10-14, some orthodontic and/or dentofacial orthopedic problems are easier to correct if addressed earlier. Orthodontic treatment for children can be complete and complex, that is, it can act on both the teeth and the jawbones.

Teenager braces

In the case of adolescents, it is recommended that monitoring and possible orthodontic treatments be scheduled around the age of 10-14, after the permanent teeth have erupted. Most often, orthodontic treatment is indicated between 10 and 14 years. At this age, treatment can benefit from a "growing-up" period that helps correct the bite and coordinate the jaws. At this age, the metabolism is increased and this helps to shorten orthodontic treatment periods. The models of dental appliances that work for orthodontic treatments at this age are multiple, so depending on the particularities of the case, we have a choice. Regardless of whether a mobile brace, a classic fixed brace, or an invisible brace is recommended, the results are often very good; adolescence is therefore an age when treatments with dental appliances can be very effective, and therefore you parents should know this and take advantage.

Adult braces

Orthodontic forces move teeth in the same way in adults or children, but treatment in adults may take a little longer due to the maturity of the bone. We use a wide range of orthodontic treatments specially designed for adults, from metal brackets to invisible techniques (brackets on the lingual side of the teeth or transparent braces - Invisalign, Spark Aligner, Clear Aligner) which improve the appearance of the smile, facial appearance and a healthy bite is obtained, also improving masticatory comfort. While many people think that only children and teenagers can wear braces to correct the aesthetics and functionality of their smile, more and more adults are turning to orthodontic treatments with braces. There is nothing against orthodontic treatments with dental appliances as you get older. How long will you need to wear braces as an adult? It will probably take a little longer than with children. Depending on the case, your treatment may last less than a year or more than two years.

Standard metal braces

The device acts on the teeth by applying guided forces over a period of time. Under pressure, the teeth move on the arch in the desired direction, which leads to the remodeling of the space and obtaining their correct positioning.

Physiognomic sapphire braces

Sapphire braces are very aesthetic, with transparent brackets, applied to the outside of the teeth. It represents a truly aesthetic solution compared to other types of devices. It is appreciated all over the world because it manages to combine maximum efficiency, minimum cost, resistance and a more aesthetic appearance. The very good resistance is due to the latest manufacturing technologies, but above all to the sapphire crystal which exhibits high hardness. It is biocompatible, does not create allergies. It is less visible on the teeth than the metal appliance. It does not discolor over time. The sapphire dental appliance has small zirconium particles on the bonding surface where they interpenetrate the composite, thus reducing the rate of detachment of the parts. Thus, the dental appliance created with the help of this material lasts better over time. Patients feel quite well during the treatment. Considering that orthodontists claim that the average duration of treatment is 1 and a half years, two, wellness matters a lot to patients. Depending on the complexity and severity of the treated case, the treatment with fixed dental appliances can even extend to several years. In addition to the resistance unanimously recognized among dentists, monocrystalline sapphire is also distinguished by fine processing and top-quality finishes. The dental appliance does not discolor over time, compared to the polycrystalline ceramic one. This feature matters a lot for socially active people who talk or smile frequently and are always in the sights of others.

Self-ligating dental appliances

The self-ligating fixed brace is a permanent orthodontic correction device. It bears this name because of the technology behind it – the self-ligating system or Damon. The self-ligating dental appliance or Damon, an innovative structure. Self-ligating braces have a more practical bracket attachment system with a flap (self-ligating system). It supports the arch in the slot instead of elastic ligatures, allowing a better sliding of the arch in the brackets, reducing the friction and pressure applied to the teeth. Self-ligating technology is one of the novelties of orthodontic treatment because it manages to increase the degree of comfort felt by the patient , but also to revolutionize the structure of a classic fixed dental appliance. A fixed self-ligating appliance has an innovative structure with special springs that slide freely in the bracket, which allows straightening of teeth and correction of occlusal defects much easier, with fewer visits to the office for its adjustment. In addition, the level of pressure exerted on the teeth is regulated in this way, eliminating the pain and discomfort felt by the patient during the treatment.

Mobile dental appliances

The role of removable dental appliances is to correct mild or moderate dento-maxillary anomalies, by acting on the jaws and aligning the teeth. They are also important for preparing children for treatments with fixed brackets. The removable appliance is the dental appliance that the patient can apply and remove by himself, without the help of the orthodontist. These devices are indicated for solving several types of dental and skeletal abnormalities in children in the growing period.

Disjunctors

If your child needs a jaw breaker, then it is good to know that it is applied to the upper arch and is meant to enlarge it so that all the teeth can be properly aligned. The active element, the one that produces the effect of widening the dental arch , is a screw. The breaker screw is rotated by the patient, as a rule, 2 times a day (morning and evening) for 2-4 weeks after the recommendation of the orthodontist. This leads to rapid expansion of the upper jaw. In cases of serious maxillary anomalies, depending on the surface needed to align the teeth and correct the bite, surgical dissection of the upper jaw may be necessary, which is performed by the oral-maxillofacial surgeon, in close collaboration with the orthodontist.

Dental retainers

Restraint must last at least half the duration of active treatment. This stage is necessary because the ligaments that fix the teeth in the bone are very elastic and have a very good memory once the appliance is removed, the elasticity of the ligaments tends to bring the teeth back to their original position, thus losing the appearance of occlusion for which both the doctor and the patient have submitted so much effort. To ensure that the teeth "lock" in the new position, they must be held in place for an additional period. The retention treatment differs from person to person, depending on the case, the orthodontist will make the necessary recommendations. Thus, near the end of the braces treatment, there will be a discussion about the retainer. The fixed device may be recommended, which will be worn permanently for a period of time at least equal to that of wearing the dental appliance (usually even longer). The recommendation can also be that of wearing a mobile device (gutter) that will have to be worn at night, usually for a year. The first months after the end of the treatment are the most sensitive, because the bone and tissues fail to hold the teeth tightly in the position won. Therefore, during this period, in the case of the mobile device, the recommendation may be to wear it for at least 8 hours/day.
